Couples Therapy at Mountain Vista Psychology

At Mountain Vista Psychology, we have couples therapists who incorporate different methods of couples therapy, including Emotionally Focused Couples Counseling and the Gottman Method Couples Counseling. In the following paragraphs, we will share a little about each approach.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

First, let’s dig into Emotionally Focused Couples Counseling. In using the Emotionally Focused therapeutic model, you will collaborate with your partner in session to work through some of the difficulties you are experiencing. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapists look at each partner's attachment style and focus on how to repair those attachment injuries so you can be a better partner.

According to ICEEFT, “What makes EFT stand out is its focus on emotions and how we manage and use them. This approach helps people understand their feelings and the feelings of those around them, leading to healthier and more fulfilling relationships. It’s not just about finding quick fixes; it’s about getting to the heart of the matter and creating lasting change.” Emotionally Focused Couples therapy has a strong research base behind it as it helps couples develop a lasting loving and intimate connection.

The Gottman Method

Another well-respected approach to couples work was developed by John Gottman. The Gottman Method helps strengthen relationships in three main areas, including friendship, conflict management, and the creation of shared meaning.  Gottman’s approach can support clients in understanding their conflict styles and developing healthier ways to work through challenging situations.  For example, it can be helpful to be able to label the Four Horsemen, which are behavioral predictors of divorce or break-up that Gottman identifies in his work. The Four Horsemen are criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling. When partners engage in these behaviors it erodes the relationship.

In fact, Gottman was able to identify which couples would stay together and which would separate by observing their use of these behaviors.  Through identifying these behaviors, couples can shift their interactions so they are not hurting each other. When in a relationship, we all have conflict. The way we move through conflict matters for the health and well-being of the relationship. Couples therapy can support couples in moving through conflict in a way that is healthy for the couple and each person individually.

Both methods can be helpful for couples. There are some couples who are more attracted to Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and others resonate more with The Gottman Method. Many couples benefit from both frameworks!
