Denver Counseling: 3 Things to Look for In a Denver Counselor

Are you looking for a Denver counselor?  If so, this blog post will give you a wealth of information in making a good choice.  You can feel overwhelmed when trying to find a therapist, especially when you don’t know what to look for.  You feel vulnerable and unsure.  Therapy can make such a profound and positive impact on your life and is an important decision.  I have created a framework of what to look for in a counselor so you can feel confident in your decision.

  1. You need to like your therapist. Research indicates that the most change in therapy can be explained by the therapeutic relationship.  It makes sense, right?  If you don’t trust and feel safe with your therapist, you probably won’t be able to make any significant improvements with them.  If, on the other hand, you feel cared for and supported by your therapist there is a much greater likelihood that you will be able to create change.
  2. Research based approach. Over the last several decades there has been much research done to determine what is and is not effective in counseling.  For example, EMDR is a form of therapy that effectively addresses anxiety and trauma.  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy  works great for anxiety and depression.  Play therapy is important for children.  If you are going to take the time and money to invest in yourself or your child you want to spend it well.  Choose a therapist who uses a research based approach and tracks progress with you!
  3. Specializes in your area of struggle. Although most therapists who are well trained can work with a variety of issues, it is helpful to find a specialist.  If you need marriage counseling find someone who specializes in working with couples.  Likewise, if anxiety or ADHD is the issue find someone who knows their stuff and loves to work with anxiety or ADHD.  Don’t choose to see someone who tries to be all things to all people.  Let’s face it, nobody can REALLY do that well.

If you can remember these three things you will be well on your way to choosing a therapist.  You will find someone who best meets your needs and can help you create the change you need in your life.  Mountain Vista Psychology is a thriving Denver Counseling practice and we are happy to help you reach your goals.  Our practice consists of several practitioners who specialize in anxiety, ADHD, and relationship difficulties for children, teens, and adults.  We do individual and family counseling.  We know what we do well and focus on those we can best help!  Call us at 720-583-9332 or email us at info@mountainvistapsychology.com.
