Neurofeedback and Brain Health

The brain plays a central role in neurofeedback because it is the source of the electrical activity that neurofeedback monitors and helps regulate. Neurofeedback is a technique that uses real-time displays of brain activity to teach self-regulation of brain function. It has been shown to be effective and helpful in reducing symptoms of: anxiety, depression, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ASD ( Autism Spectrum Disorder), trauma, and various other mental health diagnoses. The importance of brain health and neurofeedback
Brain health is essential for overall well-being because the brain controls virtually every function in the body and shapes how we think, feel, and act. Prioritizing brain health can enhance cognitive abilities, emotional resilience, and quality of life, while reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases as we age. The brain is responsible for cognitive functions such as: memory, attention, problem-solving, and decision-making. Keeping the brain healthy helps maintain these abilities and can delay or prevent cognitive decline. A healthy brain is also more adaptable and better at forming and retaining new memories. Furthermore, brain health affects our mood, stress levels, and emotional resilience.
A well-functioning brain can help regulate emotions, cope with challenges, and maintain a balanced mood, reducing the risk of mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, or ADHD. When doing an intervention such as neurofeedback therapy, taking care of your brain is extra important! Taking care of your brain is essential when doing neurofeedback because the technique relies on the brain’s responsiveness and adaptability to feedback to improve its self-regulation. Neurofeedback aims to help the brain reach a more balanced and efficient state, and a well-cared-for brain will respond better overall to the training. A healthy brain is more responsive to neurofeedback signals, making it easier to adjust and strengthen desired brainwave patterns. If your brain is already in a good state, with reduced stress and inflammation, it is more adaptable, making neurofeedback training more effective and helpful.
How to take care of your brain?
Taking care of your brain involves a mixture of lifestyle habits. Here are some key strategies:
Exercise regularly:
Physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, boosts blood flow to the brain, promotes the growth of new neurons, and reduces inflammation. Activities like weightlifting improve overall strength and contribute to cognitive health by increasing circulation and metabolic support to the brain. If you do not like going to the gym, consider walking outside for 30 minutes a day.
Eat a Brain-Healthy Diet:
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats helps maintain brain function. Dehydration can negatively impact concentration, alertness, and cognitive function, so water consumption is also very important! Please keep in mind that if you are considering or already doing neurofeedback therapy, it may be suggested or recommended that you cut back or eliminate gluten or dairy from your diet as they both can cause inflammation in the brain.
Get Quality Sleep:
Sleep is critical for memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and clearing waste products from the brain. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps regulate your body’s internal clock.
Engage in Mental Stimulation:
Learning new skills, playing strategy games, solving puzzles, or reading can strengthen cognitive abilities and promote neuroplasticity.
Try to manage stress, worry and anxiety:
Chronic stress can harm brain health by increasing cortisol levels. Techniques like meditation, deep breathing, and yoga can reduce stress and improve focus and emotional regulation. Talking with friends, family, or mental health professionals can be a helpful way to process stress.
After doing a neurofeedback session, it is important to try to rest and get some sleep! Consider choosing a meal or snack that is nutritious and has no gluten or dairy in it. It also might be helpful to go for a mindful and relaxed walk for 15-20 minutes to get the blood flowing to the brain and that additional boost of endorphins!
